Infantile colic affects 20% of infants in Australia as symptoms typically peak at six weeks of age. Colic in newborns can be highly distressing for new parents, with crying and fussing occurring for at least three hours a day, and at least three hours each week. Colic crying often presents as an expression of pain, and can be very difficult to settle or comfort newborns when they’re in a ‘colicky’ state. Despite not being a signal of an unhealthy baby, colic (also known as ‘PURPLE’ crying) is a stage that some babies go through when they seem to cry for long periods of time and resist soothing.
